Author's Note: The title of this poem refers to a quote by Mark Twain: "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt."
Close your eyes, love.
Picture us in the park last summer
The stars twinkling on that happy scene
You and I sitting on a little wooden bench
Nothing to stop us, no borders in between.
Picture us in the park last fall
The wind's steady breath ruffling our hair
You draping your coat over my shoulders
The moment's beauty seeming unfair.
Picture us in the park last winter
The happy crunch beneath our feet
A grin stretches across your face
We wade our way through sparkling sleet.
Now open your eyes.
See us in the park this spring
The fluffly white clouds and a beaming blue sky
It's so perfect, too perfect, and I want it to be real
Would it be okay with you if I started to cry?
