Nowadays, most kids don't even know what composting is. Composting is recycling things that nobody needs, into brand new, fresh, fertile, soil. There are many things that you can compost. For example: Hair clippings, stale bread, disposable coffee filters, fruit scraps, vegetable scraps, leaves, egg shells, tea bags, pasta, coffee grounds, and even dryer lint and paper napkins!
Those are just some of the many things that you can compost. Here are some examples of things that you NEVER want to compost: meat, oils and fats, diseased plants, dairy products, ashes, pet waste, and to be on the safe side, you should look into books about composting and maybe find a good website about composting.
The first step on how to compost, is to make or buy a composting bin. A composting bin can cost from 30 dollars to a few hundred dollars, depending on the size. If you are more interested in building your own composting bin, you should look in a book or online.
Building a composting bin can be complicated because it has to be just so. A composting bin can be especially helpful if you have a garden. The composting bin will turn garbage into a useful mixture that will help to make rich soil.
Until my parents decided to buy a composting bin, I never knew what a composting bin was. Once they told me about it, I was happy that we would be doing something good for the earth. All the stuff that you can put in the composting bin is garbage that most people would usually throw in the garbage can, and let rot in a land fill for who knows how long.
Good Luck to those who are going to try composting! See you for the next article of How We Can Help: Save the Earth!
