I sometimes wonder, how do parents name their children? I know my parents got my name, Shelby, off a movie. Some parents go to a baby name website! I highly doubt that parents look on the most popular list (who wants to have the same name as five people in the class?) to find the perfect name, but hey, what do I know? Here is the top ten names for boys and girls so far in 2009:
Boys
1. Ethan
2. Aiden
3. Noah
4. Jacob
5. Logan
6. Jack
7. Jackson
8. Joshua
10. William
Girls
1. Ava
2. Emma
3. Madison
4. Isabella
5. Olivia
6. Abigail
7. Sophia
8. Chloe
9. Emily
10 Addison
On the same website, you can look up names and their origins, meanings, different spellings, and other names people liked.
For instance, my name's gender is girl or boy, the origin is English, it means sheltered town. Some different spellings are:
Boys: Shelby, Shelbie, Shalabh
Girls: Shelby, Shelbi, Shelbie, Shelbey, Chelby, Shelbee, Shellby, Chelbie, Shelbe, Shelbea, Chelbi, Shalba Shallbe, Chelbea, Shelbei, Shelba
And people who like the name Shelby also like the names: Skylar, Kenzie, Addisson, Quinn, and Paige.
Wow, I think I like Shelby instead of Chelbea.
Still, how can a parent find the perfect name?
Well, this site has a name search engine that lets you put in the gender, origin, starts with/ends with, and how many syllables.
So I said I wanted a girl name with a Spanish origin that starts with an "S". The first result that came up was Savanna. That is so pretty! I love it!
It also has tips for naming your baby. It says you should avoid long first names with long last names, and the same with short names. Also, watch for initials that can spell something that could turn into a mean nickname, like Zac Ian Thomas.
Anyway, this awesome site is called http://www.babycenter.com/babynames, but you can find stuff like this all over the net.
Finally, MY favorite baby names:
Girls:
Rose
Jayden
Carol
Katie
Shelby (of course)
Savanna
I used to like Kayden, but I found out it was a boy's name.
Boys:
Ethan
Kade
Tyler
Austin
Eric
