Let's take a hike; a hike through life. Life is a journey of the mind and soul. This journey is filled with ups and downs, goods and bads, but every single experience or memory creates who you are today. Life is a mystery and because of that you should treat everyday like it's a basket full of opportunities. After you start treating everyday like that you'll recognize things that provide an opening for an experience to add to your collection. Standing on the edge of life, waiting for the next opportunity, is the epitome of courage.

It was the best trip of my life and it was halfway over. We had set foot in a small Italian city that glowed culture. We had spent the day in a day camp that helped you overcome your fears; fears of anything really, not just the fear of objects or situations. After a few activities that opened our minds to the experience, we broke up into groups. My group was second to repel the tower that stood on the hill. It was like an omen and the sun hit it just right so that it looked like the reincarnation of Jesus. To get to the tower we had to hike to the top of the hill. I say hike but it was more like climb up. Italy is a very steep country; if I didn't learn anything else it was that. When we reached the top we had to put on our gear. There were helmets and straps galore. The whole ensemble made us all feel like complete goofs. As we ascended the steps to the top I kept looking out the windows admiring the beauty. I have never been afraid of heights, but the fact that I was going to be on the side of the building was somewhat daunting. In fact, I idled and said that I was enjoying the scenery. But when I became the third to last I decided that not taking this opportunity was ridiculous and a waste of time. I took a deep breath and stepped up to the edge, ready to look fear in the eye. As I leaned backwards it was not life that flashed before my eyes, but complete and utter happiness that I wasn't a fool and had taken control of my fear.

I learned that I am capable of anything if I put my mind to it. I also learned that throwing away humongous chances isn't worth the experience that you will gain in exchange for a little fear. If you conquer your fears you will always look back to that memory and say hey I'm glad I did that. Standing on the edge of the tower was when I learned to stand on the edge of life.

Rocking out to Rise Against,
