I was hanging out with my friend Chelsie, listening to her mp3 player and talking about music, and basically just goofing off.

After the song "He Said She Said" by Ashley Tisdale ended, she asked me, "Do you have any songs that are secular on your cell phone?" (My cell phone also works as an mp3 player.) You see, my mp3 player right now only has two artists on it, Mandisa, and Group 1 Crew, both Christian.

Well I said, "No, not yet." Then she said, "Oh, your mom doesn't let you?" Then I said, "No, I just haven't put many songs on there yet." Which is true, but it really bothered me that she automatically assumed it was because my mom wouldn't let me. Which is an unfair stereotype, just because a lot of my favorite singers/bands happen to be Christian, doesn't mean I think all secular music is evil! There is a lot of awesome music out there, both secular, and Christian.

One of the reasons why I listen to Christian music is because it's clean, I bet you've heard the phrase "garbage in, garbage out". If you listen to a song that has a lot of swear words, you just might start saying them.

Also not all Christian bands just write praise songs. What makes a band Christian is not that they sing about Jesus all the time, it's that they have a Christian world view. One of my favorite Christian bands is "Superchick". They don't just write praise songs. Their song "Anthem" talks about women's rights, and not giving up. Here is what the chorus says:

"Here's to the girls on their boards with bruises and scars
Here's to the girls whose fingers bleed from playing guitar
Here's to anyone who never quit when things got hard
You'll never let them say, you'll never get that far"

Some people might say, "Christian music isn't hardcore enough." Well that is far from the truth. There are Christian artists in every genre of music, from country, to pop, to rap, to heavy metal.

Back to secular music, some might have bad lyrics, but not all. I like a lot of secular artists too, like Sara Bareilles, and Martina McBride. So just because someone likes Christian music, doesn't mean they're legalistic or anything. So before you start bashing it, why not try it?

This is Mspacman1, going to go listen to Superchick. *click*
