When I was a little girl, I remember the night my aunt got married. I was so excited to go see her. I got up early and put me dress on, ran into my parent's room and woke them up.

"Mommy, daddy! It's time to get up! Auntie's wedding is today! Mommy!"

They both uneagerly rolled out of bed and got dressed. I thought my mommy was so pretty, her hair in an updo, her curls framing her soft face. Daddy looked good too, he was in an all black tux and had some funny thing in his pocket that matched mommy's dress. Everything was going right that day. As we went to leave, daddy told mommy she was very pretty and I could see love radiating from her eyes. I was happy because mommy was happy and daddy was not mad at all.

When we arrived, it was a large, fancy dinner hall. We walked in and chandeliers sparkled with a thousand gems. While surrounded the entire place and there were flowers overflowing over every table. A fountain was centered in the middle and made a soft calming rhythm. Gold accents glittered and my aunt walked into her room, looking like a goddess in her white dress. It was like a fairy tale. Nothing could ever go wrong.

Mommy had just wanted to go talk to her sister. I was standing next to her, looking up. I didn't want to go into the crowd, there were so many people that I didn't know and I needed her, peeking behind the folds of her dress. Daddy told her that she couldn't go because this was her family, she couldn't leave him alone. I could see his eyes darken. My mom stared and then proceeded to go see my aunt. As she was walking away with me in tow, daddy grabbed her arm and yanked her backward. She flew backward and I was knocked to the ground. I stared up and watched daddy say, "Never do that again. You deserved it." The love evaporated from mommy's eyes and she stood by his side unwillingly. She gazed longingly at her sister, wanting so badly to go over and congratulate her.

Ten years later, I'm going to prom. it's every teenage girl's dream. I was so excited to go. I went with my best friend to get our hair done. I got an updo that left loose curls hanging, with flowers weaved in. I put on my dress, shimmery and blue, gave one last look to the mirror and headed out the door. My best friend and I walked tot he door to meet our senior boyfriends, so they could take us to the senior prom. Their mouths gaped as we walked through the door. they told us how beautiful we looked. My boyfriend looked and his eyes were filled with joy. "I'm the luckiest guy tonight, you're so gorgeous." We were both nervous, we didn't really know anyone there besides each other. The only person I knew was one of my best friends from dance class who was going to graduate soon. I wanted to see her so much, I wanted to see how gorgeous she was. So when we arrived at the prom, it was held at this huge country club. There was a gazebo that had thousands of cascading roses. the scent was sweet and the sun glistened against the wet surface of the pond behind it. We entered through the doors and a huge atrium greeted us. It was filled with grand windows, each a vibrant color. as we went into the dinner room, white tablecloths covered and rose bouquets decorated each table. In the center of the room, there was an ice sculpture that dripped into the flowers below it.

After we sat for dinner, we went to go dance. It was a blast and I danced with my boyfriend all night. We spent at least a half an hour teaching him how to dance, and once he got it, we danced most of the night away. I was all smiles and we were having so much fun. I was with my best friend and my boyfriend, having the time of my life, I thought life couldn't get any better. I looked through the glass door near the dance floor and saw the sun setting. Then it hit me - I had forgotten to see my friend! I apologized to my boyfriend and told him I needed to find someone.

There was only like half an hour left and I wanted to spend a lot of time with her. When I finally found her, I screamed and hugged her. We just started to dance like the weirdos we are. it had only been a few minutes when I felt a tug on the back of my dress. My best friend appeared and told me that my boyfriend was mad that I hadn't spent any time with him. I shocked, wondering why he would say that. I spent the entire night with him and I had only see my friend for minute or two. I had to slink away from my friend, saying I had to leave without giving a reason. My eyes watered, I was going to miss her and she was leaving soon. I might not see her again. When I finally made it back to our table and he grabbed my shoulders. "What do you think you were doing?" Why was he being like this? "I was just going to go see my friend." "You're ditching me for your FRIEND???" he shouted angrily. I stared blankly at him. I looked into his eyes and saw my father, glowering down at me. He gave me a face like I was disgusting and pushed me away and I fell into the table, knocking over the flowers. "Stupid chick . . ." he murmured and waked away. I had water all over my dress. Everyone was gaping and I slowly got up from the floor, dusting myself off, and my best friend followed me to the bathroom.

I was filled with anger. I couldn't believe he would do that, he made a fool out of me in front of everyone. I walked back out and had to stand at his side all night, staring at my friend. Her eyes looked betrayed, like I didn't want to see her. I lowered my head and stared at my feet. I knew what I needed to do. When I saw my mom drained of her love, it made me so angry. No one would ever do that to me.

It's the day after prom now. And I'm driving to his house to do what my mom should have ten years ago.

"Am I supposed to be torn apart, broken-hearted in a corner crying? Pardon me if I don't show it. I don't care if I never see you again. I'll be all right. Take this final piece of advice and get yourself together, but either way baby I'm gone" -Goodbye, Kristina DeBarge
