Author's Note: Last week I did an article titled, "Amazing Health Facts". It was requested that I write another one. I am excited to be telling you guys some more interesting facts. Most of these facts will be more about stress, and eating. If you have any cool facts, write about them in the BBS. I would love to read them, and I am positive that everyone else would too.
We hear things about our health almost everyday. We either hear them from commercials or television shows, from friends and family, or we read them from a page on the Internet. It is very important to know which facts are true, and which facts are just rumored to be real. In order to know the truth, make sure that it was tested by a group of scientists, who have proved it to be true. All of my facts are from books and magazines, with proven scientists' work. I hope you enjoy them!
Facts from "Fit To Live" by Pamela Peeke:
- For 99% of human history, the average life expectancy was less than 18 years. Scientists estimate that by the year 2050, there will be over 1 million centenarians (people who are 100 and over).
- Those who have faith give themselves a boost to their immune systems and are less likely to experience anxiety or substance abuse. It has been proven that believers also tend to exercise more, smoke less, and have lower blood pressure and cholesterol. (This could be any type of faith, or beliefs.)
- A typical reaction to stress is a panicked response that is called catastrophizing. When we forget someone's name and panic, for example, we fill our brains up with stress hormones and make it less possible to remember. Brand new research shows that when people learn techniques to stop catastrophizing, their brains show greater information processing and problem-solving intelligence, even a proven 3 years later.
- One kind of stress scientists have identified is concept shifting. This is the stress of changing our focus from one thing to another. The average North American worker shifts concepts 10 to 20 times every hour, up to 200 times a day!
- The amount of information the world produces doubled between 2000 and 2003 to 5 exabytes of information yearly. Five exabytes is equivalent to 37,000 new libraries the size of the Library of Congress.
- If you do not wake up hungry, you blew it the night before. They call it breakfast for a reason. You are breaking an overnight fast. Waking up hungry is your cue that you mad a good choice with how much you ate the night before. If you do not feel hungry, you ate too much, or you ate too close to your bedtime. Make dinner your smallest meal of your day, and lunch your biggest!
Facts from Women's World Magazine:
- A little sun speeds your metabolism. Recent studies proved that limited, unprotected sun exposure for just 10 minutes in the morning every day, can increase your metabolism enough to make you 10 pounds slimmer without diet.
- A handful of nuts triggers a 68% increase in fat burning.
- Hunger is contagious. The more people you eat with, the more you're likely to eat.
- A dog's sense of smell is 10,000 times stronger than ours!
- Excessively chlorinated water can erode and stain tooth enamel. Make sure you brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste after spending time in a pool.
Just a few weird random facts, not necessarily about health!
- To resist the urge to spend a lot of money, do not wear red out shopping. The surge in blood pressure, energy and confidence that it brings leads to more purchases. Wearing green is your best bet!
- Spark more dinner conversation with an orange centerpiece. Researchers have proven that the warm yet invigorating color gets people thinking and talking.
- Popping a stick of peppermint gum will help keep you alert.
- Elevate your feet above your heart for about 15 minutes, three or four times day to reduce blood pooling.
