I know that all of you have heard of the famous Oreo! Oreos are a beloved snack in the U.S. and around the world. Most of you like to dunk them in milk, or twist off one side and eat the middle first. Well, I'm here to get behind that delicious chocolate sandwich cookie. (While I'm eating some, of course!)
Think about it, you have dipped your Oreo in some plain white milk. You're about to bite into it . . . hold on a second! Is there more to this delicious snack? Is there a little history behind it?
Well, that's exactly what I thought! What about this little cookie? What's to special about it other than eating it?
The Beginning
Since its introduction in 1912, the Oreo has been the most purchased and loved cookie as of today. (Wow, in two years that'll be 100 years!)
In 1912, NaBisCo (National Biscuit Company) had an awesome idea to make a cookie, which is what you see today: two chocolatey cookie disks, and a white creme filling in between. The only difference today, is the design on the disks.
NaBisCo kept making a lot of versions of this delicious Oreo:
1975 -- Doudble Stuffed Oreo introduced
1987 -- Fudge Covered Oreo introduced
1991 -- Halloween Oreos introduced
1995 -- Christmas Oreos introduced
How did it get this mysterious name?
No one really knows how this name formed! There have been many rumors about where the name "Oreo" came from. One that I know about the most is cutting the name apart. The "re" would stand for "creme", and the "o's" would come from the two o's in the word chocolate. (Hmmm! interesting, huh?)
Well, I'm done here, and I'm going to go enjoy milk's favorite cookie while watching some reruns of The Simpson's.
