On August 6, 1911 a star was born. Lucille Desiree Ball, was an actress, comedian, model and radio actress.
Her father died when she was a very young girl, and she lived with her mom and grandparents. Her grandfather enjoyed plays and took them out to watch performances quite often. It's there that acting began to creep into Lucille's mind.
When she was a teenager her mother sent her to the John Murray Anderson School for Dramatic Arts, only to return home a few weeks later when her drama coaches told her she had no future as a performer.
She began her career as a model, and wasn't too bad either. Even though she enjoyed modeling, acting was her true calling. So she slowly worked her way into supporting roles in motion pictures. She starred in such a large amount of b-movies; people began to call her the "B-Movie Queen".
Apart from her modeling and acting, she also was on radio shows. She played Liz Cooper in the radio show, "My Favorite Husband". That was where the idea for Lucille's first television program came from.
Her first television program was "I Love Lucy", a show where she played Lucy Ricardo, and her husband in real life played her husband on the show, as Ricky Ricardo. The show was the most watched program for four of its six seasons, and was one of the only shows to finish on top of its game.
After the "I Love Lucy" show, she starred in the Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz show, "The Lucy Show", "Here's Lucy" and "Life With Lucy".
Lucille had amazing talent, and wasn't willing to give up on her dream. Contrary to what some people may believe, breaking into the acting business is not easy. It took Lucille years of extremely hard work, but she never gave up. And because of that, she is considered one of the pioneers of television.
I, personally, look at Lucille as an amazing actress with outstanding perseverance, even when people told her she would never act, she still moved forward; she was an amazing testimony for aspiring actors.
Now I'm off to watch some "I Love Lucy" re-runs.
