Something has been really bothering me lately. It's been on my mind constantly, making it hard for me to concentrate on some things. What exactly has been bothering me? Well, the answer is us. Our behavior. Our actions. I don't think we realize how much we can hurt each other, and it scares me.
This weekend, I caught up with some old friends of mine that I haven't hung out with in nearly a year. Everything was going great . . . that is, until I remembered why I didn't hang out with them much anymore. We were all talking, you see, and throughout the whole conversation, it seemed like they could only talk about other people. The things they were saying about them . . . it just wasn't right. They just insulted everyone they talked about, without even showing any signs of regret towards what they were saying. It made me sick to my stomach.
It also got me thinking. Why do we treat each other so badly? I mean, what benefits do we even get from hurting one another? In truth, we achieve nothing. So why do we do it? The answer to that question I do not know. I guess we just get carried away sometimes and forget how much harm we can cause someone through one slip of the tongue. I mean, words are very powerful things. They can destroy a person, maybe not so much physically, but mentally. For example, a simple phrase such as "You're ugly" may be meaningless to you, but to someone else, might be almost as painful as a hard slap to the face.
We need a change. We need to throw away our ignorance and start to respect one another. Compliment that quiet girl that always sits in the back of the classroom. Say hello to the boy whose locker is next to yours. These little things may seem insignificant to you, but it could make someone else's day. Most importantly, please try to look past the physical. Don't judge people because of the way they look. Keep an open-mind. Remember, the best things about people can't usually be seen by the naked eye.
Together, we can overcome this sickening behavior, for if we don't, we could ultimately end up destroying ourselves. This may seem scary, but it's absolutely true. I'm ready to make a difference and replace the pain with love. Are you strong enough to do the same?
