Hi. One thing I haven't seen in the Times for a long time is a book review. I searched the
Archives, and their were some great book reviews from a long time ago. Now all we
have are articles on newbies and oldbies, and even though that is cool, the Times
should have some more variety. So, I read this book, Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carson Levine. It was such an awesome book I thought I would review it for you.
The book takes place in New York City. Eighth-grader Wilma Sturtz is not exactly
popular at her middle school, Claverford. In fact, she's something of an outcast!
One day when she sees an old lady at the subway and helps her on. The lady is so
grateful that she offers Wilma a gift. This gift is a wish, and she can wish for anything
she wants. Wilma wished to be the most popular person at Claverford. Her wish
comes true, and everyone starts liking her. Even the Queen of the school, Ardis Dunley,
starts being a friend to Wilma. Now Wilma has a date for the Grad Night dance (and
forty other boys asked her!).
However, Wilma realizes she made the mistake of saying that she wanted to be popular at Claverford. That means ONLY at Claverford, and she is going to the high school next year. So her wish has only three weeks to exist. The resolution to this book is when the popularity gets taken away, but the ending is a good one. The whole book really makes you think.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is about 10 years old to 14
years old. It's a magical book in modern times, which is hard to find. It was also
funny, especially when Wilma messed up in front of the popular people, but they still
liked her. I could easily relate to Wilma, and I'm sure a lot of people would wish for the
same thing. But a lot of people don't think before they make their wishes, and Wilma
Sturtz didn't.
Phew. So that's my book critique! I hope this brings some variety to the Times. I'll see you all really soon!
