Pi = 3.14152965 . . . which is the circumference of any circle. Pi is never-ending, as you may have learned in your Math class. Math class teaches you a little bit about Pi -- how to use it, some of the digits, etc. But something you might not know about Pi is that there is a day celebrating it! This day is declared "Pi Day"! The holiday celebrating this mathematical value was founded by Larry Shaw.
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th because of the first 3 digits (3/14). It is celebrated at 1:59:26 pm, the following digits of Pi.
"What do you do on Pi Day?" Is a question you may be asking yourself. Well take a guess. It isn't that difficult to figure out. Still don't get it? Alright I'll tell you. You . . . eat pie! Yup, pretty typical. Eating pie on Pi Day.
On Pi Day there is also a contest held to see who can recite the most numbers in Pi. Whoever recites the most without making a mistake wins (this will be a shock) . . . a pie.
Now you might be wondering how I know about Pi Day. It is kind of a strange thing to know about. Well I'll tell you this right now, I'm not some Math lover who researches "Pi" on Google for fun . . . because that would be strange. No, I know about Pi Day from my new math teacher.
My math teacher informed our class about Pi Day and declared that we would celebrate it! School would be out for Spring Break, so instead last Friday we had our Pi Day. Most of the class left school early for vacations and such, and some just skipped because they didn't want to stay for Pi Day. I was left in the class with about 7 others . . . out of a class of 28. In total we had 3 pies brought to the class. Two for the class to share, and one for the person who could recite the most digits in pi.
Pi Day is only supposed to be celebrated for 20 minutes, but our Pi Day was celebrated for the whole math class. We did no work, instead we rolled down the school hallways on spinny chairs reciting the digits of Pi . . . that is until a few teachers came out and put a stop to our Pi Day in the hallways. So we had to hang out in the classroom instead, where we listened to music and had our Pi reciting contest, a contest which my friend Ellen won reciting 28 of the digits of Pi.
All in all, Pi Day is a fun day to have in any Math class! So print this article out and give it to your math teacher and demand them to let you celebrate this great day honoring Pi.
