Many people consider the Nintendo 64 to be the greatest gaming console ever made. It was the first console to have brilliant three dimensional graphics using the 64-bit technology that no other system had been able to match in that time period. This system has been said to have some of the best video games ever created, and has stood the test of time, for many people around the world, young and old, still play it today.
The Nintendo 64 was released in September of the year 1996. Many recall going to the store with their parents and finally getting to go home and try it out to see if it was truly worth the hype. The console itself was one of the first to feature ports that allowed four players to participate in certain multiplayer games. The controller itself had an analog stick, which allowed the greatest amount of movement and exploration that any gamer had ever experienced.
One of the best features it had were three dimensional graphics, which were created using polygons. There was one downfall though; the graphics were very limited because the games ran on cartridges, these have been said to have a need to be blown in order to work properly every once in a while. Nintendo received harsh criticism for this, considering the Sony Playstation games ran off discs, which allowed a lot more storage. Despite this minor downfall, the improved graphics using what textures that could be utilized allowed gamers to enjoy seeing their favorite characters come to life. Without this brilliant console, I doubt that we would have had the stunning graphics that we have today. Below is a picture of the Nintendo 64.
The games that were released for this console were no doubt about it, some of the greatest games of all time. Some of the most well-known games in which I happen to own are Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. Super Mario 64 was a launch title for the Nintendo 64. It featured a plump plumber named Mario who gets an invitation to Princess Toadstool's castle, only to find out that she has been kidnapped, and must then save her. The game was primarily controlled with the analog stick, which allowed Mario to tip-toe, walk, and run about. It was, and will always be, one of the greatest video games of all time.
If someone asked me my opinion of the greatest game of all time however, I would without a doubt say, "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". Ocarina of Time was released a few years after Super Mario 64, and had slightly better graphics. There isn't much I can say about this game, other than that it has a very special place in many children's hearts. Many people other than myself would consider this game to be the best game ever made. It featured a young boy named Link, who is chosen to be the Hero of Time and must save the land of Hyrule from destruction and peril by an evil man named Ganondorf. You spend most of the game completing temples, which contain challenging puzzles, many enemies, and challenging bosses. Most of this game is truly an adventure, and I would recommend this game to anyone who owns a Nintendo 64. It made you feel as though you were actually there, as if you were Link and the Hero of Time.
The Nintendo 64 was no doubt about it, one of the best video game systems of it's era, probably one of the best consoles of all time. If you don't have a Nintendo 64, I would definitely ask any of your relatives if they happen to have one they are willing to sell or give away. You can also find many of its classic games on the Wii Shop Channel for only ten dollars. I would recommend trying to find the actual console, to get the real experience, however. You definitely won't regret spending the money, for a lot of my childhood memories come from playing these games.
Author's Note: Sources: Many of the facts in this article came from my memory, since I have owned my Nintendo 64 for over 9 years.
