I peered over the top of the cliff, watching the huge waves crash against the sharp rocks. My foot stumbled on a pebble, which fell below to be swallowed up by the waves. The air tasted salty on my tongue. I breathed it in and got ready to jump when I heard a familiar voice. "Anna, don't jump. Anna . . .", it slowly began to fade. I turned around and saw Austin. It was like he was there, but wasn't at the same time. He was a transparent spirit, hovering a few inches above the ground. "Anna, don't . . . don't jump. You'll end up like me . . . !" he yelled. "You don't care, you never did," I replied. I heard him scream and then I saw him charge at me. And then I was falling, and falling, and falling . . .
I woke up breathing hard. The dream had been so vivid, I could swear it was real. I quickly wrote down everything that happened in my notebook. It was 10:30 AM, I must have slept in. The delectable smell of bacon filled my nose, and I knew it was time for some breakfast. So, I ran downstairs to find my family waiting eagerly for my dad to finish cooking. "Hi . . . Dad," I whispered. I wasn't too comfortable calling my parents Mom and Dad. When I was about 4 years old, my real parents gave me away. They were going through hard times and didn't have much money. I don't remember my family much, but I do remember my 2 sisters who were 11 and 13. I don't know why they gave me away. I grew up thinking my parents didn't want me. But I knew deep down that they still cared. I remember the day when the drove me to the adoption center, I was sitting in between my sisters who were both crying. At the time I didn't know what was going on. I was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Longsworth, who were rich and had 3 other daughters.
"Hey there, Annabear! Sit down, we made pancakes and bacon!" My dad responded. "Ooh, anything special going on today?" I asked. My whole family stared at me like I was crazy. "What?" I asked. "Your fourteenth birthday?" My mom said. 'Oh, wow, nice going Anna. Forget your own birthday,' I thought. "Oh! Of course! I was just messing with you guys!" I replied, trying to sound cool. After breakfast, I strutted outside and ran into Austin. "There's the birthday girl!" Austin yelled and picked me up and hugged me. Austin and I had been friends since I first moved in with my foster family. "Hi Austin! Oh, I had the weirdest dream last night." I said. "Lemme guess, I was in it?" He guessed. I giggled and ran towards the lake in my neighborhood. "Hey, wait for me!" Austin called, and sprinted after me. I pulled a piece of bread from my pocket and threw a tiny piece in. A swarm of minnows attacked the bread like kids in a candy shop.
"You know what I really want for my birthday?" I asked. "Another hug?" Austin asked with a grin. I giggled. "I want to find my real family." I replied. "Then let's do it." Austin said. "Huh"? I asked, puzzled. "Let's go find your parents!" Austin repeated. And so my vast journey began.
