Harlem Renaissance

You Whyvillians probably haven't noticed, but me Bubble am a Harlem renaissance fanatic!!!

It all started when we started learning about the Harlem renaissance in our class. We learned about all sorts of stuff: the people, the time period, and how it happened. So here are some little tidbits on the Harlem renaissance:

Time Period: 1920 - mid 1930's

People: Louis Armstrong, Zora Neale Hurston, "Dizzie" Gillespy, Duke Ellington (to name a few)

How it started: After slavery ended, many freed slaves moved north to Harlem, New York.

Many people would perform for the white crowds at the Cotton Club and the Savoy. I thought that the time period was very moving. These musicians created the sound of the time period.

They also inspired many songs, including Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke", which was about the Harlem renaissance. The one part that gives tribute to the musicians says, "There's Bessie, Miller, Sachamo and the king of all, Sir Duke! With a voice like Ella's ringin' there's no way the band could lose!"

I hope that just gave you a bit more insight on the time period and for those of you who have never heard the Harlem renaissance now you know.

The Harlem renaissance infused fresh blood not only into American music but also its literature. Zora Neale Hurston was one of the definitive writers of the Harlem Renaissance.
