People are always looking for ways to make the world "a better place". Also, many older people think that the youth are incapable of making a change and doing things that have a beneficial impact on the world. So many kids have proved these doubtful adults wrong and still continue to. Here's to all of you kids out there who have yet to prove these adults wrong and make them see what you can do. First, you have to know that it doesn't take much time and effort to make a positive change. In fact, you can change the world with just a click of the mouse.
Is it really true, you ask? Can I really change the world with the click of a mouse? Well sure you can! With FreeRice.com, it's possible. I was first introduced to this website by my sixth grade English teacher. I've been using this website on and off for almost three years now.
What is Freerice, you ask? Freerice is a website that allows all kinds of people, young and old, to answer questions pertaining to the subjects of English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German vocabulary as well as English Grammar, Chemistry, Art, Geography, and Math. They have something that suits almost everybody's interests. Even if it doesn't fit your interests, it can be a great study tool.
Freerice was founded in 2007 by John Breen. The website has two main goals: Provide education to everyone for free and to help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free. The website is funded by the advertisements on the website as well as various sponsors who donate money to the United Nations' World Food Program (WFP) which is the organization that provides the rice to impoverished people. In 2009, the website was donated to the WFP.
Within the websites for six months of operation, Freerice was able to donate over 42 billion grains of rice. The United Nation's World Food Program affirmed that this amount of rice could feed up to 50,000 people for one day (it takes about 19,200 grains of rice to feed one adult for a day). Since it began, as of October 15, 2010, Freerice players had earned enough rice to feed over 4.32 million people for one day.
Today, after over three years after being first introduced to the website, I logged on to the website and decided to play for the first time in a few weeks. I decided to brush up on my Spanish. Within five minutes of playing, I had donated 500 grains of rice. Now, this certainly isn't anywhere close to being able to feed a person. However, it got me thinking, if I could donated this much rice in five minutes, how much could I donate in an hour? Two hours? Three?
These are questions that we can keep in mind. Many of us are fortunate enough to have roofs over our heads, food and clean water. So why not do our best to help those who aren't as lucky? By devoting just a few minutes a day, you can help to fight world hunger with the help of the United Nations. Now doesn't that sound like it's worth it?
