Before I start talking about the actual topic of the article I need to apologize. I haven't had a new article to this series in quite a while. It's been a busy couple of weeks and I've been side tracked. I apologize for this but I'm happy to announce that I am indeed back with a new article today. I've realized while doing this series, that every week I just review a musical and I've never really explained why I have this passion for musical theater or how my passion began and has evolved. That's what I thought I'd do this week; it's a little different than usual so bear with me.
Ever since I was a little girl, I've always loved the arts. Whether it was theater, drawing, painting, etc, I loved it. As a young child I remember watching movies like "Annie" and "The Sound of Music" quite frequently. Although at that point I wasn't obsessed to the point where I was memorizing lyrics and listening to show tunes on a daily basis like I do now, I still had a strong appreciation for musicals. I enjoyed the idea of using song to tell a story. I'll admit my love of musical theater wasn't always as strong as it is now though, and I regret that. I'm sure many supposedly excellent productions toured to my town during those years I didn't have this passion and I missed out on my chance to see them. It wasn't really until this year that I really got into show tunes and musicals.
I remember it started when I downloaded the soundtrack to "Wicked". Listening to the pure voices and excellent lyrics in this production lit a spark inside me. Instantly I was hooked on this vibe that musicals gave off to me. I started renting movies such as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "RENT" and my passion has only grown from that point. Now, I often check to see if any tours or productions are going to be near me, I love watching movie musicals and I have to admit, my iPod is full of show tunes.
As for the reason why I have such a strong love for musicals . . . it's a hard thing to explain. Taking a story and adding songs to help explain and carry it out gives it something special in my opinion. The songs provide extra explanation and deep emotion within the characters. Hearing a story told through music gives me some kind of hype that I lack when I listen to a story told without song. The songs themselves having truly meaningful lyrics that many songs now don't have. They can tell you a characters struggles and pain, as well as their joy and happiness. It's something unique in my opinion, and as cheesy as musicals may be, I love them.
