Though the Times has had a significantly smaller amount of articles in each weekly issue, there is something that is bursting with assorted writers and topics: poetry. Every week a new writer or two emerges with an outstanding piece of work in this genre of writing. I'm sure there are more of you that like to write poetry also, but either don't feel comfortable sharing it with the Times, or don't have the time to edit and submit your pieces via email. This is perfectly okay, but if you were wanting to get your poetry out there in a different way, reading this article should be in your best interest!
About a year ago I told my mom I loved to write poetry. She was kind of surprised since she and my father both hating writing, but she was happy I found a hobby. My mother didn't really know what my writing style was, or what I wrote about, but she went online to look up some places where I could publish some of my poetry. It was then when she found an awesome site that publishes nearly everyone's work in a poetry anthology seasonally.
This website is called: http://www.poeticpower.com/
This site is an easy way to submit poetry and get it printed. You can then either purchase the book that has your poetry in it, or maybe be offered a spot in a contest bracket. You could also be asked to be one of the judges. When I first started submitting poetry to this anthology book, I did not receive any offers to be in their friendly contest. (Prizes were cash,) But the last time I submitted to this place, I was asked to enter the contest for my age group, and judge poetry for grades 4-6 that submitted.
That's another great thing about this website - anyone from kindergarten to twelfth grade can submit their poetry into a contest for their age group. The younger you are, the more likely your poem will enter the anthology, but older poets get in the poetry books too.
If you are reading this but are not a poet but an essay writer, you will be happy to hear that this website also does essay contests. In these contests, you can get published in an anthology book, or go into their online contests with cash prizes. Winners of both the poetry and essay contests get published on this Website along with their piece.
If your parents or guardians are not okay with you submitting your personal information on a website, I suggest talking to them while you enter the online application. I for one have submitted many times, and know they only use your personal information to send you a postcard or letter congratulating you on entering the anthology or contest. If your parents or guardians are still not okay with you submitting poetry here, I still suggest visiting the site to read some of the outstanding poetry found by clicking the orange "winners" tab at the top of the home page.
I hope at least one of you out there will want to publish into these anthologies. They're great ways to grow as a writer, and to get some of your work out there. You can receive feedback, and improve your writing skills. I highly recommend this site to anyone with a love of writing and an interest in publishing your work!
Happy writing
