Hey there, Times readers. So once again, it is almost summer time and I know you all are itching to read books outside of the school curriculum. Though I must say, "Othello" was a great read.
Anyways, as you guys may have seen in the Times or on the Internet lately, the movie "The Hunger Games" is cast and is set to be released in theaters on March 23, 2012. And if you haven't figured it out yet, the movie is based on the book, "The Hunger Games", by Suzzanne Collins.
Here's a summary.
Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen and her family live in District 12, the dregs of all twelve districts of the futuristic ruins of North America, Panem. The corrupt Capitol of Panem hosts the Hunger Games, an event in which two children from ages twelve to eighteen are forced to fight to the death as a way for the Capitol to keep its hold on and instill fear in the districts. Katniss finds herself in the arena facing betrayals, unpleasant surprises, and ultimately opening up a Pandora's Box.
Intense, eh? If you think from this summary here that you can already predict what will go on or how things will go down, think again!
This book is a fantastic read. Collins wrote such suspenseful moments, great characters, and with such a creative and phenomenal imagination. It was so brilliant, I read it in one day!
I highly recommend this book if you're interested in futuristic tales, violence, politics and government, revolutions, and even a teeny bit of romance (but not too much, as it's not the whole point of the story!)
Besides entertainment, this book launches the reader into deep thought involving man's inhumanity towards man, corrupt government, and so much more. So if you want to exercise your noodle over the summer, get your hands on this novel ASAP.
Due to the graphic deaths and events in the book, though, I'll have to give this an audience rating of ages 12 and up.
Witness the goings-on of the terrible Hunger Games and the fight to win through the eyes of Katniss and become one of the millions of people going crazy over the novel. And don't panic. When you're done with "The Hunger Games", read "Catching Fire" and" Mockingjay", the second and third books in the trilogy!
