Since a young age we've all been taught not to judge a book by it's cover, and we're lying to ourselves when we say we don't. Facing a two hour drive home after shopping in a nearby city I needed something to do to save me from my boredom. While looking through the book aisles at Wal-Mart I found a book that caught my attention: "Wither" by Lauren DeStefano.
The cover is what caught my eye. As you can see for yourself, it's quite an interesting cover.
The girl in the front, Rhine, lives in a world where at twenty years old the females die, and at twenty-five years old the males die, all from a virus that cannot be stopped, although people hope it can be. Because of this young age to die at people are frantic to make children, and as many as they can during their time on the Earth. This need to add to the population caused sixteen-year-old Rhine to be kidnapped and sold as a polygamous bride. She lives in a mansion with her husband, Linden, two sister wives, Jenna and Cecily, Linden's dad, Housemaster Vaughn, and multiple servants and cooks. Rhine meets Gabriel, a servant who she is growing dangerously attached to, and plans to escape before her time runs out.
The story really makes you think. In the future could our world be like the world in the book, where people die at a set age? It's hard to think that way, but it could happen. I really liked this book. It has to be one of the best written books I've ever read, and each chapter ends with a bang. I never wanted to put the book down; the writing was so enticing that I just wanted to read it until I finished. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give this book a 9. There were some parts I wished were a little slower paced, but overall this book is amazing, and you'd be making a huge mistake if you didn't read it.
If I were you I would be running to the nearby bookstore to get this book. Believe me, you won't regret it. It's definitely worth the $10 it cost me.
