On Thursday March 29, 2012, it was announced that the production of the Canadian penny will be stopped forever. How does that feel, my little copper friend? To know you are one of the few left in a dying race? Although you will always be accepted as payment, you will slowly become extinct.
What caused these drastic measures to be taken? Well it seems that it costs more to make you than you are actually worth. Ottawa has even stated that you are, and I quote, "a burden to the economy".
I must admit, I thought the same for most of my life. I used to hate pennies. Seriously, they were the most useless things! You would go to the store to buy something that would cost $2.13 . . . are you going to use pennies to make that change exact? No! You're just gonna hand over $2.20 or something! Now Canadians will no longer be faced with that dilemma, as prices will be rounded either up or down to the nearest five cents.
For all your faults, there are many things I will miss when you're gone. No more lucky pennies, penny for your thoughts, throwing a penny in a wishing well, take-a-penny-leave-a-penny . . .
For such a small coin, you will be missed dearly. It just doesn't feel Canadian to get rid of you! As Marianas Trench once said, "These desperate times call for desperate measures". Therefore, the time has come for me to start hoarding every penny I find.
Before it's too late.
RIP Penny.
Sincerely,
Canada
