Blake turned and looked at me. I sat up straight, defiant. "How DARE you?!" I screamed. "How DARE you tell me that and then just LEAVE?" He didn't come into my room. He kept his gaze down and stood sheepishly in the middle of the hallway, right in front of my door. "Get back here right now." I hissed, my voice low and sinister.
He obeyed. He stood against the wall, a good 5 feet away. He was out of my reach. I glared at him and asked how his new partner worked out. "It didn't. She . . . She wasn't you. Every time I looked up I expected to see a young lady by the name of Hayley Karr in front of me. All I saw was some chick named, well I didn't even bother remembering her name. I decided to transfer and filled out my request before I came here. I . . . I thought that if I left, I could, y'know. Do something again. Be happy. Not spend the rest of my life stuck here hating myself everyday because of what happened to you. You can't walk at the moment, you lost your job. What's next?" he sighed and slumped down in the chair.
"So you thought that taking away my best friend would be a good idea?" I glanced out the open door as a nurse walked past with a clipboard. Instinctively, I glanced to see her date. It wasn't there. Blake was going off about how sorry he was, how terrible he felt, how he just couldn't do it. But I was too preoccupied with staring at people in the hall, looking for their dates to no avail. 10 people walked past me - not a single date. "Shut up!" I said suddenly.
"I'm sorry Hayley. But I don't know what you want me to do!" He shouted back at me. "You tell me to get back in here and tell you how I love you but then you just yell at me! I explain myself and you tell me to shut up? You don't make any sense!" I looked back at Blake Hend; his date was absent. My eyes widened, and I pulled in a gasp. He stopped and looked at me. "What is it?"
"I can't see them." I didn't know how to act, what to think, how to feel. He stared at me. "I can't see the dates. All of them are gone. They're all gone. Hand me that mirror." I said, gesturing towards the hand mirror on the bedside table. He did and I looked at it, my heart racing.
There, over my head.
My date.
"What's the date today?" My voice broke. Blake looked at his phone.
"November 20. Why?" He looked at me. "Hayley. Why?"
One month.
One month until I died.
