10 years. I can't believe it. It feels like yesterday we were walking the halls of our high school, dreaming of where our lives would take us. And yet, it feels like it was a different time; so much has happened since then and our lives have completely changed.
Last night was my high school's 10 year reunion. The class of 2002 came from all around the state and country to reunite and celebrate our lives. When I first heard about the reunion, I was hesitant to go. Would people remember me, would I remember people, would I be considered successful, or good-looking, or a failure compared to my peers? All of those questions swirled around my head.
Ultimately, I decided to swallow my nerves and buy a ticket for myself and my husband. At least with him by my side I would have some support. But once I arrived and started to see the familiar faces, all of my nerves disappeared. It was bizarre, really. Even though everyone looked the same, they looked completely different. The boys who are now men had beards and seemed taller. The girls who are now women had grown confident and mature. And everyone in the room was just genuinely happy to see each other.
Many of my fellow alumni were married or had kids. It's amazing all that can happen in 10 years. There were lawyers, doctors, mechanics, teachers, financial managers and musicians. Everyone had a story to tell about what they've been up to for the last 10 years. Some have traveled the world, and some have never left our hometown. But we all knew no matter where you were in your life, you were right where you were supposed to be.
Thinking about last night and all of you Whyvillians who are still in high school I wanted to share this with you. High school may seem like the most important time in your life. And it is definitely one of them. You are learning who you will be and making some important decisions. But high school is by far not the best time of your life. You have so much living ahead of you, and you will go through so many challenges, successes and failures. But what is so great is in 10 years you can reunite with your fellow alumni and realize that it's all one glorious journey. Cherish the time you have now, and remember, this is only the beginning to something amazing.
Looking forward to the next 10 years and seeing where we all will be in 2022!
