Welcome to the Queen City of Saskatchewan. We are the Capitol City and
the seat of our Legislature. Our name Regina actually means "Pile of
Bones", taken from the indigenous language during the pioneering of the
Canadian West.
We have lots of interesting things to do here in
Regina. We have the Museum of Natural History, which shows the habitats
of our four-footed, two-footed, and occasionally foot-less friends of
nature (there is a really cool diorama of a garter snake nesting area).
We have a huge inner-city park, with a man-made lake called the Wascana.
There are paddle-boats available and a Ferry Ride to Willow Island for picnicking. There is also a double-decker tour bus that runs a Tour through the Park.
On the Grounds you can find the Diefenbaker Place, a historical view of one of our important political figures, the Legislature buildings, the Center of the Arts (which boasts the second
largest stage in North America), the Science center which features
applied science participation especially for kids, along with the IMAX
theatre. There are a couple of kids' playgrounds, the Wascana Pool for
swimming, tennis courts, a band shell, and a marina. The bridge that
spans the lake is a beautiful piece of architecture with hand-painted multicoloured railings. Then there is the RCMP Training Facility with the Mounties Museum, several nature and wildlife preserves, and the Ipsco Family Park with its giant slide. The University of Regina Campus has been growing and expanding as well, and has a variety of architectural styles incorporated into its facilities.
We also have a bustling urban center in the Market Square area, with
weekly Farmer's Markets for locally grown and manufactured goods. There
is the Cathedral Village Arts Festival with street vendors, parade and
street dances. The Flatlands Music Festival in the Park features
up and coming Saskatchewan bands and artists. Don't forget the Regina Folk Festival
and the Regina Jazz Festival. Then in August there is the Exhibition
with rides and carnival food for all . In the fall we have Agribition,
one of the world's larget agri-based exhibitions, with visitors from all
over the world, and afterwards there is the Royal Red Arabian Horse Show.
Our city is relatively small compared to many others, but advantages
abound. Lots of open green space, clean though sometimes dusty air, and it's only a half hour drive to the beach. Regina is situated just off the edge of the Qu'Appelle Valley system which is a leftover from the glacial sheet that used to cover a large chunk of the Prairies. It's a wonderful place for hiking and walking, or just for taking a scenic drive.
So welcome to Regina, Whyville, we look forward to having you visit.
