Have you ever wanted to start designing on Whyville? Have you ever needed help with what to start designing with and some tips? Well the purpose of this article is to answer all the questions you've ever wanted to know about creating parts on Whyville.
I have asked three well known designers on Whyville to give a couple of tips on how to design to help any new designers or Whyvillians who are willing to start, and also a brief idea on what to start designing with.

I suggest people to start out small so they can get used to the face factory layout. It's good to make things like noses and practice making them look good in every scale . . . and once people master that . . . it's safe to move on up to bigger parts such as plushies, lips, and hats. Shirts, hairs, and eyes are generally the hardest things to make . . . so make sure to practice a LOT before making these and just have a lot of PATIENCE. That's all :D I hope this helps haha.

I started off with shirts. Other than facial features, shirts are the easiest. I mean . . . there's only so many tips I can say, but none of them matter unless you're truly artistic. There's just some people who aren't artistic, and some people who are, that's the way it is. The only main tip I can give is to build up the color in your designs. So if I was making a dirty blonde hair, I would use a light brown base, and then make hair definitions with a slightly lighter brown, then from there you would copy over with orange, yellow, cream, white. Like I said, it just comes down to creativity.

My tips are: Take time with your design. Only submit it if it's something up to your standards . . . Something YOU would wear. Don't get lazy. Even if you have to do a design pixel by pixel (that's how I design eyes) take your time, your design could take a month or it could take 20 minutes, it really depends on what it is. If you're starting off like first time EVER, do not expect it to be great. Remember, you don't need to submit your design! You could do 100 designs and keep erasing them until you get really good and finally submit one you like. Yes, designing does take practice. Some helpful hints are:
- When doing shirts, make sure both sides are even.
- While making eyes, make sure they're even! PIXEL BY PIXEL.
- Make sure everything is the right size! No one wants to wear tiny or huge parts.
- If you can't shade, don't. You might have a wonderful base hair and ruin it with awful shading. Practice shading beforehand and don't submit awful shading . . . make it something you would wear!
- Study designers work! Look at other designers work and maybe even try some different techniques you learned.
- Watch tutorials, some people have posted GREAT tutorial videos.
- DON'T REMAKE. if you are looking to design and decide to remake, be prepared to be ridiculed and humiliated and you Whyville reputation will be ruined for all eternity!
