Welcome to "Song Selectors", where songs are recommended - and chosen - by readers like you. This week, IbeMai61, Cathris, Tanibanan, Xoxopeace and I have collected a handful of songs we think you all should check out. Here's this first song.
"I Am The Doctor" by Murray Gold
Recommended by: IbeMai61
Genre: Classical
Similar artist(s): Ben Foster, John Barrowman, Peter Howell
From the start, "I Am The Doctor" begins building in intensity adding more instruments in as the song progresses. String instruments and members of the woodwind family take control at the beginning, but shortly into the song, brass instruments and percussion join. This song does not have many vocals, but through the instruments much emotion is conveyed and a story is told throughout the piece.
"Whenever I'm in a bad mood, this is instantly my go-to song," said IbeMai61. "It makes me thing of happy times, especially since it's from Doctor Who. The blend of the instruments is truly amazing, making this one of my favorite songs."
"Seventy Times 7" by Brand New
Recommended by: Cathris
Genre: Emo-punk
Similar artist(s): Cursive, The Wonder Years
"Seventy Times 7" is a song filled with energy. The song has loud, electric guitar throughout and showcases other instruments from your typical rock band. Edgy-yet-catchy vocals are belted with emotion as the song continues on, and angry lyrics tell a story worth reading and listening to.
"I like this song because it expresses how I feel about 90 percent of the world's population," said Cathris.
"People Never Done a Good Thing" by Patrick Stump
Recommended by: Tanibanan
Genre: R&B/Soul
Similar artist(s): Michael Jackson, Prince
Welcome to the 1980s - 2010s -style. Patrick Stump definitely brings an old-school sound to modern-day pop/soul music with an R&B flare. Above anything, Stump's vocals will amaze you with his wide range and the vigor he sings with. The music behind his voice is also remarkable as it blends multiple instruments together into a high-energy groove.
"'People Never Done a Good Thing' takes a style of music popular 30 years ago and brings it into the 2010s," said Tanibanan. "It's a really fun song to listen to, and Patrick has one of the best voices I've ever heard."
"Tighten Up" by The Black Keys
Recommended by: Xoxopeace
Genre: Blues/Alternative Rock
Similar Artist(s): Hanni El Khatib, Delta Spirit, Heavy, anything amazing
One thing I love about this series is that I get to hear a wide variety of music, but nothing makes me happier than to receive a y-mail recommending my favorite band. In my ever-so unbiased opinion,
"Tighten Up" is a modern song that blends old-fashioned-sounding instruments with Dan Auerbach's phenomenal, bluesy voice. Though it has become very popular on alternative rock stations, many people have not heard this song, or even this band, which is a horrible crime! Check out this song as soon as possible!
"I love the song and the band in general," said Xoxopeace. "Their music always puts me in a great mood even when I'm feeling down."
"I Had a Drink Today" by Katie Noonan and the Captains
Recommended by: Me
Genre: Alternative/Pop
Similar artist(s): Katie Melua, Rachael Yamagata, Ingrid Michaelson, Feist
I'm a huge fan of eerie-sounding music, and this song definitely fits the description. "I Had a Drink Today" has a darker feel to it the second the song begins, and through various different aspects such as sound effects and Noonan's beautiful voice, the song's intensity builds. My favorite part of this song would have to be when Noonan hits two incredible high notes that are both soft and intense at the same time, but I enjoy every second of this song regardless of whether
or not there are vocals. This song's a winner for lovers of alternative, pop, or anything in between!
I'd like to give a big thanks to all of you who make this series possible; I can't do it without you! Also to readers, thank you for reading, and enjoy your music!
Author's Note: I am trying to space out the recommendations that I receive to have a wide variety of music each week. I also try to publish the people who are further down on my list of submissions. In other words, people who submitted a while ago will be published before
those who just send me a y-mail.
