This magnificent bird can flap its wings 53 times a second and is the only species of bird that can fly backwards! That's right, this is a ruby-throated hummingbird; a male to be exact. The female hummingbird does not have the ruby coloring to the chest and is more gray instead of green like the male. Did you know that the oldest documented ruby-throated hummingbird lived to be 9 years old? The typical lifespan is generally around 5-7 years of age, but that hummingbird must have been pretty healthy! Their migration period from the United States all the way down as far as South America is a constant, non-stopping flight for these tiny birds. Just about a week ago, I put out our hummingbird feeder in hopes of one coming to drink the sugar water. This male decided to show up just the other day and I got a quick snapshot of it! I apologize for the blurriness; I had to zoom in pretty far! I hope a majority of you get to experience seeing this beautiful bird in your area!
