Long Walk

Bettjoe
Whyville Poet
I walked along a dusty road
with dirt on either side,
but step by step I drew nearer
to flowers that bloomed behind.

Then the road grew narrow
into a little path,
and soon I found myself
skipping faster on the grass.

As I hurried through a wood
the animals stepped aside.
The scenery kept changing
as it swept all through my mind.

But then it became a river,
flowing roughly and gay.
But I needed not to slow
for I kept from coming astray.

Soon I saw a highway,
pollutants in the sky.
And I was sickened deeply
for it hurt all of the night.

So why do we follow a path
so dear to behold,
when at the end we realize
that we ruined it in search of gold,
oil, and things to make us better
but really we become weak
for the world dies and becomes bleak.
