Palm trees seem to be the equivalent of weeds here in Florida. These late bloomers take months to grow from a seedling, and 15+ years to get to their average adult size. My old neighbor grew two palm trees in his backyard and they barely reached adulthood before Hurricane Katrina knocked them down (onto our roof -- such pleasant memories).
