Today, I want to talk about discrimination in Whyville. It's
happened a lot and you probably don't realize it. It may have even
happened to you and you didn't realize it.
There are so many kinds of
discrimination that it comes in different forms. It could be about your
shirt or your race -- either way, it's wrong. Whyville wasn't a place of
judgement before, and it should remain that way. With Whyville's
population growing, I can imagine how hard it must be on the staff to
keep track of everyone. They may have not noticed the recent teasings
and racist remarks going about Whyville.
It's wrong what these people do. Maybe even you do it and you're not aware of it. Either way, Whyville needs to remain a place of fun and safety.
A couple days ago, I went into my favorite chat room, the Spin Speak. I
like this chat room for a specific reason: there is never a negative
vibe there. But this day, I went in there and there was. There was a girl
telling a boy how she just moved from Afghanistan to America to get away from the terrorists and to come to freedom. One girl came over and said to her, "You Talibans are all the same, go back to your shacks." This rude remark was unacceptable in my
perspective. I have watched the news lately and I have learned that not everyone in Afghanistan is a terrorist, so I spoke up to the girl. I told her to stop, she was being rude. Instead, she said to me, "You're the cause of all the chaos on September 11, 2001." Obviously I was not, but I silenced her.
I wrote this article to teach you a lesson, and to help members of the staff. When you hear someone being teased for their race, speak up and teach the teaser a lesson. I recently wrote a letter to the staff to tell them about these recent happenings. People like these who discriminate over race or maybe over what sort of hair you're wearing
are rude. Whyville is not a place of judgement.
Editor's Note: Thanks for your article, usadol! I can only hope that all citizens will understand you loud and clear, and help spread understanding throughout our town. Folks, if you run into people who act racist and won't listen to reason, please 911 report them, so that City Hall can keep our town free of intolerance. Like usadol says, Whyville is not a place of judgement.
