Hey all, today I'm back with another art submission. This week, I decided to paint a portrait of John Lennon, based on the original piece by Richard Avedon. Richard Avedon was known for his photographs of depicting famous subjects, like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and the Beatles.
These four psychedelic portraits were solarized by his assistant, Gideon Lewin. According to the definiton on Wikipedia, solarisation is when "the image recorded on a negative or on a photographic print is wholly or partially reversed it tone". The photographs were taken in 1967, along with a group portrait.
I painted the portrait used acrylic paint on a 6inx6in canvas I purchased at Blick, an art supply store. Since the photograph is narrower than the canvas, I extended his shoulders down instead of cutting them off like in the original piece. I went for a sharper look and used more solid colors, and limited the fuzziness around the chin and eyebrow.
