It was over a year ago that it began.
The two of us have been friends since we began
Whyville, almost two years ago. We were both on
different screennames than we are now, and we both were
getting used to the environment of this website.
90Angel was first. A seemingly honest letter, written
by CHworker, appeared in her mailbox. Around this
time there had been numerous City Hall imposters, yet
they were still unknown to Whyville management.
According to the letter, 90Angel must email
her password or lose her account. Ironically, it was
doing just this that lost her account. CHworker stole
everything, even got her banned.
The usual hacker story. Now the twist sets in.
*J* was a friend to both of us. We trusted her
and talked to her all the time. After losing her
account, 90Angel searched for *J* in City Records.
There she was, wearing 90Angel's old look. She had
the same hair, nose, eyes -- even outfit. This could
have been explainable, but the old 90Angel kept her distance.
Several weeks later, she was informed by one of
*J*'s classmates that she had gone to school,
bragging about stealing 90Angel's account.
*N* was next. *N* was one of our best friends on
Whyville, and the three of us had our own clique,
complete with suits, bodyguards, the works!
Unfortunately, we no longer have communication with
her. *N* rarely signed on to Whyville and eventually
we had to move on. The details of her absence were
unknown to us for several months.
DAPT came after that. He had been a moderately
popular guy on Whyville, always around and always
friendly. Before we knew it, he was gone too. (Note:
DAPT was hacked again, later, as well.)
I was the last. I had always been careful about my
passwords with Trick and Vixen, but one act of
carelessness brought my account to an end. My computer
kept crashing whenever I changed my face, so one night
I asked a friend to change it for me. This friend
happened to know *J*, and perhaps was at her house
that night.
Talking online one day, someone commented
to me, "So, how was prison?" More and more friends
from real life kept asking me why I had said such
weird things the day before around 4 PM. At 4PM the
day before, I was at a movie. I was not online.
Someone had hacked into my account. I began to worry,
and checked my email. It, too, was gone. This hacker
started talking to my real-life friends online. I
quit Whyville, terrified that someone was stalking me.
Before I left, though, I looked at *J*'s
City Record.
She had my face.
Months later, I returned and found my old friend, the former 90Angel. We
discussed what had happened to me and the resemblance
between her hacking and mine. Unfortunately, parents' emails were
worthless in this situation. My parents are so concerned about getting spam that they set up an email address just for when websites ask for parent email addresses. Theirs had been inactive so long that the address had been deleted, ruining my chances
for getting my password back.
Both of us are friends with one of *J*'s classmates, and finally the truth came out. "Liz" had been there during *N*'s hacking, and knew that *J* had both my email and my AOL screenname. She knew that *J* had used the notorious CHWorker screenname, and that she had stolen DAPT's account. She also knew of a hacking program that *J* used to have. Besides this, we were informed that this girl had stolen over 20 newbie screennames.
We have reported *J* countless times, yet she is still on Whyville. Despite our many 911 reports and letters to City Hall, nothing has been done. Nothing can be done until she is caught in the act.
Guys, please, no one is worth trusting online. You have no idea the lengths these people will go to in order to make things awful for you. We have had to start over, even leave for months. But now, there's a question that has been in our minds for months: Do you think *J* could be Skumbag68?
