Animal Collective has been my alltime favorite band for the past 3 years. It all started when I was browsing random music deep into Youtube. I came across a video titled Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavilion (FULL ALBUM). I loved finding full album length videos, made the listening experience so much easier than searching for all the songs you want to hear. Although Animal Collective is a pretty cool band name, it wasn't the name that drew me to the video, it was the album artwork! The artwork was this pop of greens, blues, and purples all jammed into one optical illusion!
As soon as I pressed play on that video, my life changed forever. I know it sounds cheesy, but I've never had such a strong connection to music as I did with this masterpiece by Animal Collective.
The Baltimore originated band, Animal Collective consists of four members, Avey Tare (Dave Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), and Geologist (Brian Weitz). Throughout their discography this lineup has been different for many albums, but that would take too much time to explain in depth lol. Animal Collective has released 9 studio albums, 8 EPs, and 2 live albums, and one visual album since the year 2000. With a discography as large as that, you would expect all the songs to sound alike after a while, but with these boys, that is never the case! Animal Collective's genres include (but are not limited to): neo-psychedelia, experimental, freak folk, noise pop, electronica, and psychedelic pop. Each album is distinct from the last, from the high frequency notes of Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, to the acoustic harmonies of Sung Tongs, to the ambient sample heavy pop of Merriweather Post Pavilion.
Before Animal Collective, I never really dug into these genres but mostly stuck to more indie-pop. I would have never thought I would be into this kind of music but now I can't think of how my life would be without it. To the "normal" ear, a lot of this music would sound like random bleeps and bloops and noise (I would have thought these things 5 years ago) but there is really so many layers and texture put into the music that this band makes! From the low-fi vocal effects to the massive amounts of delays, this is truly a band who makes art with their music.
I really encourage people to give this band a listen and explore the different sounds that can be thrown together to make this phenomenal music.
