Hello loves! I've got another book review for you today, and I'm just going to jump right into this, because it is absolutely fabulous.
Disclaimer: as hard as I try to avoid major spoilers, please remember I am only human, and sometimes I can't help it!
To start off, let me just tell you that I jumped into this book pretty much blind. I have heard about it through Booktube videos, and it?s pretty hyped up, because it?s written by the lovely wife of Ransom Riggs (author of "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children"). But, as far as the plot goes, all I knew before I read this book, was that the main character Juliette, can kill people with her bare hands. This isn't much to go on, but I'm always up for a bit of a mystery when it comes to starting a new book or series.
So, we follow Juliette's story, where she receives a roommate in the asylum she is in, because of course, the government locks her up for having the power to kill with a simple brush of skin against skin. She recognizes this roommate as a boy she used to go to school with. A boy named Adam, with blue eyes. He is pretty mean the first day, but when he realizes that Juliette is a good person, he changes his attitude. Or so we think. It turns out that this boy is a double agent. He works for the army, and is sent to spy on her for his commanding officer. After she is proven to be sane, she is taken captive in yet another way, and held at the army base for use as a weapon. But, he is also on Juliette's side completely, and he wants to bust her out of the army.
Poetic, hypnotic, and not lacking in action and thrills, Tahereh Mafi has written a masterpiece. Now, let me go over some of the things I liked about this book.
The very first page starts the story out with some poetry-like statements. It is confusing, but beautiful. I was extremely intrigued just by the poetic nature of the words on the page. I am a sucker for poetry, as I write it myself. I have read reviews of this book (non-spoiler ones) with people saying they don't like all of the poetry and metaphors, that it makes the story too confusing. I DISAGREE. Juliette is locked in a dark room for almost a year when we first meet her. She hasn't spoken a word in all of the time she's been there. She's in a fragile state of mind, and in my most humble opinion, the most broken people seem to write the strongest words in poetic form.
There is a LOVE TRIANGLE AND I LOVE IT. I can't help it. I get so heated and emotional when it comes to love triangles, especially when a book is written in first person, so you're reading the words as "I" and "me". It's like YOU are Juliette and it just gives lots of feels.
Another thing I absolutely love is the character transformation that Juliette makes just from the first page of the book, to the last page. She matures and evolves in such an awesome way, going from a meek, terrified girl, who won't touch anyone, to a killer awesome chick who shoots the guy trying to capture her and kill her boyfriend. 10/10 for Juliette, because I would not be able to do that.
Overall, this is an awesome story. Action, drama, romance, betrayal. The perfect combination of everything. I definitely recommend that you add this to your TBR.
