Hello, fellow Whyville citizens! This is OoreganoO and 0osamo0 reporting. We have been reading the "Cruelty to Animals" section every week! We are here to fill you in about vegetarians.

Protein is a very important factor in any vegetarian's life. It is very important to receive all the essential nutrients. Here are some foods where you can obtain protein:

  1. dairy products like milk and cheese
  2. meat alternatives such as beans and nuts

Don't worry if you are allergic to nuts, there are also many soy products to choose from. It is easy to assemble a full healthy meal.

When we became vegetarians, there were certain things we had to remember, like receiving all necessary vitamins, minerals, protein, calcium and other vital nutrients.

A great recipe to acquire protein is this bean dip! Note: This recipe is from the book Good Food Today, Great Kids Tomorrow by Jay Gordon, M.D. with Antonia Barnes Boyle.

Bean Dip

Cover 2 cups of dried pinto or black beans with purified water and soak them overnight in a cool place. In the morning, drain the water. Cover the beans with fresh water, and cook for 1 1/2 hours until they are soft. Drain beans, and save liquid for use in soups. This stock can be frozen in easy-to-thaw-and-use portions.

  • 2 tbsp. molasses
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • cooked beans
