TIKE
Times Writer

More tips from the tip boy, TIKE. Ever wondered what it is like to be a writer for the Whyville Times? Well, believe me, it takes a lot of work. Here are some of the steps and tips to help you while writing your own Whyville article or responding to one that was already written.

  1. First of all, you need a way to communicate to get your message to the Whyville Times itself. The method I use is Hotmail(tm), and practically everyone has a Hotmail account. If you do not, go to www.hotmail.com to create one yourself. Remember that the address for the times is: times\@whyville.net ...

  2. Start with an idea and grow from there. Be firm on your viewpoint; this will signal to others that you mean business. Don't be shy. Remember to use correct grammar and language while writing because many, many people will be reading this. Use spell-check often. =)

  3. After you send the article, be patient. As the Times Editor has mentioned, it sometimes takes a while for the articles to be published. In the week of July 4, 2002, the Times Editor explained that over 200 articles are submitted to the Times each week. I suspect that this number will grow in the future, as more citizens arrive to explore Whyville.

  4. Read the Times often. If you are interested in writing, make sure that you are up to date with the issues. A good reporter always has knowledge in different areas. Be familiar with the different writers and their viewpoints. The way that you present yourself is key.

  5. You don't have to help the Times just by writing for them. Reading is important as well. What would the paper be if there were no readers? Keep an open mind and enjoy yourself. What is best about the Times, in my opinion, is its combination of different teenage or pre-teen writers and dedicated readers. That's what makes the Times what it is today. =D

I hope that some of these points helped you out. The Whyville Times is ever changing and expanding. I am not sure how many Times Reporters there are out there, but I know for a fact that there have been several, several... yes, several Guest Writers. All have had an opinion, topic, or help article that has shaped Whyville and given help to other Whyvillians. I salute all of the Writers, Reporters, City Workers, and City Hall herself for helping to create one of the best pieces of Whyville out there, the Times.

So, cheers to all the past Time's issues, and future ones, too.

Helping to enrich the minds of Whyville... as always,
TIKE
