As I was reading the Animal Cruelty section, I came across one article that
caught my eye: "Should We Put Him Down?" by GGbabe.
Two years ago my beloved pet dog Gilbert had to be put down. He had a
heart murmur, several tumors and was a victim of cancer. He was in great pain. My
mother took him to the vet and the diagnosis was to put him down or to have a costly operation. My mother agreed to put him down so he would be put out of his pain.
At first I was very angry at her because Gilbert was my best
friend -- he had been around since I was born. And I wondered why she
didn't let him have the operation. She explained that at his old age of 12
the operation was very risky and costly. He probably wouldn't have survived.
Now, if Gilbert was a person, the situation would have been different. You would have done anything to save your child. No matter the price.
My best friend recently died of cancer. She was the same age as my dog. Her
mother did everything she could to save her. Chemo, different herbal remedies, on and on, but nothing worked.
You probably wouldn't spend as much money on your dog as
your child. But humans live much longer than most animals, so you would
expect that sooner or later the time would come. It is more common to have a
12 yr. old dog to pass away than a 12 yr. old girl. If Gilbert had been younger,
we would have considered the operation because he'd have had a few years left in
him, but at 12 we knew that his body was slowly "dying" and soon the time
would come.
I leave you with this. If you were faced with a choice to either put your
animal down if it was in pain and 7 years old, would you? Does age matter?
