Music, The Hidden Meanings

Guest Writer

Hey, Whyville. It's chilibean again. Today I'm writing about a much different topic than my usual articles. What is that, you ask? Music. Everclear, Jimmy Eat World, Jewel, P!nk, you name it, chances are I like it. :P

But have you ever really listened to the words (or lyrics, as some people call them) of a song? Some of them have great meaning, and tell wonderful stories. Well, below you'll find a song I have analyzed. (And I don't mean looking for similes and metaphors, and all that stuff they make us do at school.) Just take a look, you'll see what I mean. My comments are in italics and parentheses.

"Wonderful" by Everclear

I close my eyes when I get too sad
I think thoughts that I know are bad
Close my eyes and I count to ten
Hope it's over when I open them

(This sugests that the person singing this song is not living a very good life, and just wants to run away from it.)

I want the things that I had before
Like a Star Wars poster on my bedroom door

(Hmm... a Star Wars poster. Maybe the singer is a kid.)

I wish I could count to ten
Make everything be wonderful again

Hope my mom and I hope my dad
Will figure out why they get so mad
Hear them scream, I hear them fight
They say bad words that make me wanna cry

Close my eyes when I go to bed
And I dream of angels who make me smile
I feel better when I hear them say
Everything will be wonderful someday

(I think this part kinda speaks for it's self. I just wanted to add that whoever this person is, I feel bad for them.)

Promises mean everything when you're little
And the world's so big
I just don't understand how
You can smile with all those tears in your eyes
Tell me everything is wonderful now

(See? It is a little kid. Maybe this kid has an abusive parent, or his parents are going through a divorce, or both. Suggested by the 4th and 5th lines of this stanza. For anyone who doesn't know, a stanza is like a paragraph in a poem or song.)

Na na na na na na na

Please don't tell me everything is wonderful now

I go to school and I run and play
I tell the kids that it's all okay
I like to laugh so my friends won't know
When the bell rings I just don't wanna go home

(The kid is trying to hide the fact that he is unhappy and/or being abused by a parent from his friends.)

Go to my room and I close my eyes
I make believe that I have a new life
I don't believe you when you say
Everything will be wonderful someday

(This kid does not believe the parent that is saying that there is nothing wrong, and that they need help.)

Promises mean everything when you're little
And the world is so big
I just don't understand how
You can smile with all those tears in your eyes
When you tell me everything is wonderful now

(Just an FYI, if anyone doesn't know, that this stanza is repeated, so it's called the refrain.)

No, No
I don't wanna hear you tell me everything is wonderful now
No, No
I don't wanna hear you tell me everything is wonderful now

I don't wanna hear you say
That I will understand someday
No, no, no, no
I don't wanna hear you say
You both have grown in a different way

(If the parents have "grown in a different way" or "grown appart" this again suggests the parents of a child(ren) are divorcing or separating.)

No, no, no, no
I don't wanna meet your friends
And I don't wanna start over again

(Again, sign of abuse. One parent wants to take the kid(s) away from the abusive parent.)

I just wanna my life to be the same
Just like it used to be
Some days I hate everything
I hate everything
Everyone and everything

(A sign of a child growing up. Haven't you ever had days where you hate everything and everyone around you?)

Please don't tell me everything is wonderful now

I don't wanna hear you tell me everything is wonderful now

So, did you learn anything? I hope you did. Think about it.

This is chilibean, signing off.
