What Makes Religion?

TIKE
Times Writer

I have written some articles about religion, and with the introduction of Merchant's segments on religion and food, I have come up with a new article. It is based upon the elements of religion.

The following are 6 of the most important elements, which are common to all of the World's major religions:

  1. A belief in God or God(s).
  2. An idea of a human soul.
  3. Mortality meaning right or wrong, good or evil, a code of some sort of behavior.
  4. Religious leader or leader(s).
  5. Scripture of Holy Writings.
  6. Different rituals, ceremonies, or practices.

Although the elements are common, there are many differences of opinions about the basic "goodness" of human beings and about good and evil in general. The religions understand salvation differently. They believe in different Holy Writings and have different ideas of how they came about. Also, they differ in the idea of the "nature" of their specific God(s).

There articles aren't to pressure anyone into believing in something different. Notice how I concentrate on 'World Religions' instead of one religion in particular. Since people have access to Whyville from around the world, citizens here have different religions and customs.
