The Way to Win the Crowd

Like most other Whyvillians, I like to make my voice heard. I will buy an ad, show my sense of style (I know most of you are looking at me and asking, "What style?"), and I like to vote in the Whyville polls and petitions. However, I've noticed some people think they have the best ideas in the world, so they will do whatever it takes to get votes. So, I've decided to help you with some simple ideas to make your voice heard in the polls.
When making a poll, always remember to...
- Make sure your idea will really help Whyville, not just you.
- Make sure your idea is original. If someone else has the same petition, you might steal votes, or split votes, and you will never have enough.
- Give your petition a catchy name. One that tells basically about it and makes the reader want to find out more.
- EXPLAIN EVERYTHING! People want to know what you're all about (and so does City Hall!).
- Possibly make an ad to ask people to sign it.
Now for my favorite part (the real reason I wrote this): the don'ts of making a poll. :)
NEVER make a petition about...
- Giving clams to people who first sign up. Hello people! If City Hall did that, then it would make Whyville horrible. Here's why, step by step:
- person signs up
- person gets lots of clams
- person uses clams
- person runs out of clams
- person gets bored
- person leaves and never comes back or makes a new name, wanting more clams for his instant gratification.
- END RESULT... more names are wasted and newbies have less of a selection.
- Don't make petitions that offer clams as a reward for signing. I don't know how many times I've seen "First 20 people who sign get 500 CLAMS!" This is totally fake. First of all, the votes won't count because they are being bribed. Second, the people never actually get paid anyway.
- Don't ask for irrational changes. I saw one that said "Every time you sign on you should get 1000 clams. That way we can get what we want without having to work." Am I the only one who sees how impossibly dumb this is? First of all, believe it or not, Whyville is not trying to make you poor and suffering. They are trying to introduce you to the real world. In the real world, you can't just wake up and have money fall in your lap. You have to work hard. I'm only 14 and I can figure this out.
- Don't suggest that Why-passes should be bought with clams. Contrary to popular belief (and City Hall won't want me to say this, but...), Why-passes are not to make you happy. They are to earn money for Whyville so they can improve it. Citizens being happy is just a nice side-effect.
Well, I hope that Whyville will wise up to some of my points. And anyone who would like to talk to me about agreeing or disagreeing with me, Y-mail Dito50K.
