Hey everyone. I was reading one of Dr. Leila's articles on ice skaters and spinning and I decided I would write about it.
I actually do ice skate, so I can probably help a bit. The are a lot of different types of spins -- camel, scratch, sit, headless, etc. The hardest basic spin (in my opinion) is a scratch spin. For these spins you actually start the spin on one leg, then try and cross the leg that you're NOT spinning on OVER the leg that you are spinning on.
When you watch professionals do this on the T.V., you may notice that it looks like their bodies are kind of waving in the spin. This isn't the best way to describe it, but ah, well.
One of the keys to spinning fast is making sure your arms are tucked into your body. So if you don't want to spin very fast, keep your arms out more, but in a circle, like in ballet when they have their arms out but rounded in front of their bodies.
Most of the other, more advanced spins start with a scratch spin or end in one.
Thanks for reading my article,
