Healthy Debating

Every once in awhile, an article sparks up interest and becomes a highlight for several weeks. That is what the article Choice vs. Nature did, and it provoked many opinions, beliefs, issues, and facts on this subject matter.
Many may say that this article brought forth negative energy, but I would have to disagree. Never have I been more impressed with the level of response that a topic has been given. To actually compose an entire section dealing with subjects such as homosexuality and respect reflects the maturity and intelligence level of Whyville and its citizens.
After my articles Ye Old Criticism Shoppe and Walk a Mile were published, I got a lot of response from fellow citizens. Most was positive, and I would like to take this opportunity to share one with you.
Dear TIKE. You are an inspiration,
Truthfully, I am questioning my own, well... you know; I cannot say it in a message. When I first joined Whyville, I thought it was a child's site that these topics were unheard of. I am glad it is not.
You are an extremely talented author, and I enjoy your articles. But I was surprised to see the 'Hot Topics' section. I entered it, and found a lot about you that made me smile. I admire your confidence and how comfortable you are, and in my opinion, I think everyone should be like that, no matter their lifestyle.
I too agree that your attraction is something you cannot choose. I'm not a girl who would not say "defiantly not!" to being a liking other girls, but I think I am attracted to both genders. I am a little scared at this fact considering I am only 13, but if it is true, I will make sure that I will live my life normally and not go in hiding. As I said, I am questioning.
Thank you so much. You are someone we can all look up to.
A lot of love!
It just goes to show that there are those out there who are respectful and accepting. In recent articles, some explained how letters expressed anger and frustration, but not everyone is like that. Nevertheless, always remember that what you say has impact on other people, like the young girl who responded to my article.
All in all, I believe that Whyvillians have been successful in analyzing and expressing their thoughts. Some may say that Choice vs. Nature was an article that was biased and personal, but it brought forth many questions and people began to step back and put together their own perspectives. Although homosexuality is a delicate topic, it is evident in our world and cannot be erased, no matter how hard we try.
Why would we want to erase anyone, anyway?
The Times itself has done an impressive job of making people learn, showing us that education does not necessarily have to come in a form such as science, English, or history. Expressing our beliefs on world issues allows us to expand our horizons, become more intuitive to ourselves and the world around us. Those topics that have spiced up our newspaper, vegetarianism to homosexuality, have allowed us to grow and mature.
After all, what is wrong with some healthy debating?
Be Not Nobody,
