Hi, it's meg959 here, with a book report to discuss. I thought I would submit this report on the classic novel by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol, because it has recently been the Christmas season. I just read the Christmas Issue of the Times, and I knew it would be late, but you can't say I didn't try.
Title: A Christmas Carol
Author: Charles Dickens
Number of pages: 122
Type of book: fiction
Setting and time: England, 1800's
Main characters: Ebenezer Scrooge, the three spirits
Minor characters: The Crachits, Scrooge's nephew, and Jacob Marley
Summary: Marley has been dead for seven years. Scrooge is a cold-hearted man and everyone else knew that and tried to avoid him. Then Scrooge's nephew visits him and asks him to attend their Christmas feast tomorrow. Two gentlemen that are new to town visit Scrooge, asking for charity, but Scrooge just sends them out because he is not in the holiday spirit for giving.
Scrooge goes back home and when he arrives, all the bells in the house start ringing; then Marley's ghost appears and tells Scrooge that three spirits will be visiting him, on three different nights.
First the ghost of Christmas past arrives. The spirit shows a few events when Scrooge is a child. Scrooge is seen with his old girlfriend, but she doesn't want to see Scrooge anymore because all he cares about is money. Scrooge is then sent back to his home, and the ghost of Christmas present arrives. This spirit sprinkles incense on people's dinners as they come into the bakery. Scrooge and the spirit go into Bob Crachit's house where the whole family eats a measly Christmas dinner. Then the spirit takes Scrooge to three different places: a mine, a lighthouse, and a ship, where they are all celebrating Christmas, unlike Scrooge. And then they both visit Scrooge's nephew, Fred, and his family all celebrating Christmas without him.
When Scrooge returns home he waits for the third and last spirit, the spirit of Christmas future. Scrooge finds out that he dies in the near future, abandoned and unloved. When Scrooge returns to present time, he orders a turkey for Bob Chachit and becomes friendly. He says he will celebrate Christmas for the rest of his life, every day.
What I liked and disliked: I liked that the author included a bit of horror into the book to make it more exciting.
Rating: B+
I hope you liked my report on this classic book. If you haven't read this book because you think it would be boring, think again, because it isn't really that bad. I was "forced" to read it with my class, hahaha.
