For many of us, it is almost back to school. The new school year brings forth new opportunities and such. For many, it is a time to adapt into a new environment (such as high school, or middle/elementary school). One of the most important topics facing pre-teens and teenagers today is dress codes. At my school, we must wear uniforms (because I attend a Catholic school). Thinking along these lines, I asked some citizens two important questions:
1) What do you think of uniforms and/or dress codes?
2) Do you have some type of dress code at your school?
The first person that I ran into was Shmee. I asked her the question, "What do you think of uniforms and/or dress codes?" Her reply was, "I do think that uniforms and dress codes are good because you won't fight over who has the nicer clothes and you will eventually spend less money. However, I do think that a student has a right to express their own sense of individuality with their style and fashion."
Next, I chatted with Summer555. I asked her the 2nd question, "Do you have some type of dress code at your school?" This is how she responded: "Yes we do, but I wish we didn't. Dress codes don't let us express our individuality and the dress code doesn't allow baggy pants, halter tops, tube tops, etc. I attend a high school, but there are no uniforms. Just a dress code like the one I stated above."
So you can see that different schools apply different rules. Both Summer555 and I attend a high school. However, I must wear uniforms, whereas she doesn't (although she must follow a strict dress code). I have had 2 years to adapt to the uniform policy, and it isn't that bad. Although they are strict on how you wear your uniform, once a month we are given "jean days". These are days where we are allowed to wear regular clothing. However, dress codes do apply on these days as well. I, myself, have been known to stretch the rules... and I admit to wearing bandannas or long sleeved shirts under my dress shirt, etc. I am just lucky that I have not been caught... yet!
If you haven't noticed, Whyville has its own dress code. Citizens are not allowed to wear clothing products that show off too much skin, have verbal remarks, etc. In fact, the products that designers create that don't follow the "rules" are not accepted. If you break the rules in any way, you are punished. For example, I have a friend who decided to be shirtless. When the Whyville City Workers saw what he was wearing, he was immediately punished. Punishments that do not follow the appropriate "dress code" include:
- Being stuck with the "Guest Face" for a couple of days.
- Being fined.
Whether or not you like your school's dress code policy, unfortunately, you have to live with it. That goes with Whyville, too. I am sure that you can add some creativity to what you are wearing. Some of my friends have been known to add ties, cool jewelry, etc. to their uniforms at school. Dress codes can also be considered as a blessing, but it is all in the way you look at it.
Best of luck for the new school year. I am off to go play in the streets... ;-)
