Hi, it's meg959 here, and I am writing this on Thursday, January 23rd, after going to this week's Media Hour. I had a great time! There were a lot of people there participating in the program. The majority of the time was spent talking about animal cruelty, which has been a Hot Topic in the Times in the past. I think we need to bring it back, because it is a really good thing to learn about!
Did you ever thing about people who kill an animal only for its fur? It's the same thing if you kill an elephant for its ivory tusks -- that is so wrong that there is even a law about it! It's very wrong to kill an animal, unless you are like the native people from Alaska. When they kill a seal, they use the whole thing. They even make statues out of the bones -- cool! Unlike when shoe companies kill cows or horses, just for the leather. Do you honestly think that the shoe companies will use all the meat as well? They probably purchase the animal, take the leather that they need, and throw all the meat and other stuff in the garbage... what a waste. And they probably do this to 5 or 6 animals for one pair of shoes! Ouch!
Editor's Note: I wonder where you could do some research to find out what the truth is? What would Nike say, and what would animal rights groups say to your allegations? Why? If they *do* waste so much, why? How can that not be a big waste of money for these companies?
Bigfoot Bill, city worker, and City Hall were at the MediaWiz's Media Hour last night, and I got a chance to interview Bigfoot. Here it is:
Me: What were some good points that the people participating had given?
Bigfoot: There was an amazing response this week! Clearly, our citizens find animals and food two really fascinating topics, hehe.
Bigfoot: I enjoyed seeing the debate about whether humans really need meat to survive (who wants to actually do experiments and research on that?), what defines cruelty and what is necessary, and people asking whether there is a better, more "humane" way of killing animals for food. A lot of good points were made on both sides of these issues.
Me: What do you think about this topic?
Bigfoot: It's rife with questions, and I'm glad to see our citizens taking it seriously. I hope next time more folks take the time to watch the TV show that MediaWiz picks out -- that will help us all learn more about what we're discussing.
Me: What do you have planned for next week?
Bigfoot: Next week is a show on PBS, about a competition of engineers designing and building "Xplanes". Check it out, folks!
