After many weeks, I am back! This is ChinaDawl. It's been a while but seeing as how I have two free weeks from school, I decided to come back.

So, I've been meaning to write this article for a long time! In October, my period four class was looking at the media. Namely, the influence pop culture has on our society. Why is it that so many people have such an obsession on their looks? We have been told over and over that the physical appearance is not important. It is our inner self, the beauty within our hearts. Did you ever look at the commercials on television or at those ads in the magazines? Did you ever notice that in almost all of them, there was some sort of woman in it? For example, those Virginia Slims ads in magazines. Why is it that there always seem to be gorgeous women in them? They are using these to sell their products even though the peoples' beauty has nothing to do with it!

I saw an article in the December 19 edition of the Times. It was called "Vision" by Aquagerl. It was talking about how a person might be perfect on the outside but as soon as others saw how mean they might be or how much of a jerk they are, they seemed to have so many flaws. I thought it was such a great article. Her view was so interesting. What if we were blind? Mankind and society would be so much better off in terms of relationships, eating disorders, and popularity. We would be forced to get to know the personality of the people instead of making judgements about how they look before even meeting them!

That is not the only problem with the media. About six months ago, I watched a show on W-Five (if I'm not mistaken... I think it is but correct me if I'm wrong). It was a documentary about these adolescent boys whose whole lives were dedicated to video games. They loved war games and shooting games. Many of their loved ones expressed concern since the teens were so destructive and angry at times and how obsessed they were with their games. What have these things done to us? My own brother has been affected! At the tender age of 3, he watched sleeping beauty and at the end, the prince has to fight the dragon to get to the princess. For weeks after that, my brother ran around the house with a pretend sword, pretending to kill monsters, and at times, his own family members! We are so used to seeing murder and war on television that we find it an ordinary thing in life.

Of course, media isn't all bad. Without it, we would be oblivious to what is going on in the world. We wouldn't know about the wars going on in other countries, the terrorist attacks, the natural disasters in areas, etc. If used properly, media can be extremely helpful and informative.

Is the media a useful tool or a destructive weapon? It is your choice. Personally, I am caught in between.

Have a great day!
