Over last summer, I had homework. Yes! HOMEWORK over... the summer... *gasp*! It's scary, but true. I had to read a book and do an analysis on it and turn it in on the FIRST day of school. Talk about annoying.

Anyhoo, the book I chose was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey. And let me tell you, I would suggest this book to anyone, but mostly to anyone above 15, unless a person that is younger believes they are mature enough to handle a semi-complicated novel. Don't get me wrong, it's not the hardest book I've ever read or anything, I just don't know if it's suitable for anyone younger. And if you are over 15 and believe it is not suitable for you once you start it, then I am reminding you that I am not demanding you read it or whatever. I'm just saying it's a good book.

Now, moving on to the REAL criticism. As I said, it sure is a good book, but it gets a little confusing at times. It takes place in an insane asylum and is narrated by this huge Native American guy in his 40s or so that likes to pretend he is deaf and mute. The asylum is a pretty dull place; no one speaks out or laughs or ANYTHING at all much. It's all controlled by a woman the patients like to call the "Big Nurse." She's the head nurse and is on a power trip. She likes to be in control of anything and everything and if a patient steps a toe out of line, she'll send them to the "disturbed" ward, which is where they give the patients shock treatments to "help" them.

Suddenly, a new guy strolls into the asylum like he owns the place -- he always tries to get people to laugh and talk a lot. He and the Big Nurse are basically enemies from the start. He gets into a lot of trouble; but I won't go much further into what happens, I don't want to ruin it or anything. =) Just let me say that it's a very funny book that ya'll might enjoy.

There's also a movie made after the book, but believe me, if you watch it, you should definitely read the book first. It gives a lot of background that the movie doesn't.

Well, that about sums up the gist of this novel. I'll be back some other time with another book.

Until then,

googles.
