Kirbie393 here. Did you know there are organizations trying to ban our Harry
Potter books from every store in America and Canada for "promoting witchcraft,
Satanism, and sacrilegion"? I'm sure many of you Harry Potter fans have heard
about it before. Do you agree?
First, before you answer, let me show you some postings from www.abcnews.com on
the subject. First, we have the parents and other people who agree that the
Potter books should never be read again: "The Harry Potter books do teach a
religion -- a religion of Satanic worship. It's just packaged neatly in
entertaining books to hook children," says one person. Another says, "I am
amazed that out of the same mouth that says 'God bless America' comes 'Let them
read Harry Potter books.' Those books are against God and all He stands for. The
Harry Potter series is a tremendous threat to the children of this country.
Satanism is alive and well in today's society and this cult relies on the
ignorance of masses to further their cause." There are many other comments
similar to this.
On the other hand, we have comments of the
many furious, disagreeing people: "Whatever evil others see in [the Potter
books] are manifestations of their own dark thoughts." "It seems to me that
there are far greater things to worry about than a children's book, which brings
so much pleasure. We tend to underestimate our youngsters because of our own
shortcomings." "Let's get real. When was the last time you rode your broom?
Played a good game of Quidditch lately? Give us all a break and crawl back to
the 1600s."
Now, there is something I noticed about the arguments. The people who agreed had
basically one argument: the ideas put into the children's heads. Yet the ones
who disagree with the movement to ban them have many different points (I thought
that first comment was an especially good argument). The second comment says, "We tend to
underestimate our youngsters..." I agree. I know this sounds naive, but adults
seem to think we believe every word we read.
Let me point something out; ever since the coming of Harry Potter and the Order
of the Phoenix, I have been watching TV less and less. I'm about to read the
book for the seventh time (eek!) and my vocabulary has been improving. Not to
mention, I have failed to notice how any of the five books have anything to
do with Satanism.
I think parents or guardians should be able to decide whether or not their child
should be allowed to switch off the TV and read the books, but banning them
altogether puts a far worse idea into children's heads than the books do. What
do you think?
Kirbie393, over and out.
