*Sigh* QUISP here, writing an article I think no one should have to write.
It's about how far downhill Whyville has gone over the past year. At least from
my perspective.
I made my first account in May of 2001, and although there are some citizens
that have been in Whyville since the beginning, compared to a vast majority of
the population; I am an 'oldbie'. I still have many of my original face parts!
(Although they will probably soon be removed from my satchel, unfortunately!)
I've seen designers come and go, and yes -- the style has changed greatly over
the past couple years, but there are some great face parts from when I started!
The citizens of Whyville have also changed dramatically. All of it has. I suppose cities growing as fast as
Whyville have to, but for us I think we've
experienced a large decline in the integrity of our citizens. People seem to
have lost their interest in learning, which is what Whyville was founded for!
I have only recently begun chatting frequently on Whyville again (the last time was
August 2002), and am constantly witnessing make-out parties, password exchanges
(for makeovers, salary raisings, etc., which I frequently advise against), clam
begging (although this has always existed, I find it much more frequent lately),
and other similar stuff.
As a Y-Mail Helper, I have received hundreds of questions from citizens.
Although this has been mostly junk-mail, lately... that's practically all
its been! Dating invitations, clam requests, etc. All junk.
Citizens are asking me to send them the answers to the games, willingly offering
their passwords for me to raise their salaries, arguing with me when I refuse to
'date' them (if it can actually be called dating), and sending quite nasty
complaints about tapings/fines. (Yes, I know City Management has become a LOT
more strict with the punishments, but with good reason! A vast amount of
citizens are refusing to follow the rules of Whyville!)
I suppose the change in our citizenry's behavior could be a byproduct of the tremendous growth of
Whyville,
but I don't think it should have to be, and it definitely doesn't look good to
possible investors, or parents.
Although there are a few citizens who wish to learn and offer ideas in Whyville, in my opinion,
Whyville has merely become a place for youth to chat,
under the fa??ade that they are learning -- and although I am greatly disappointed
to have to say this, I would think the majority of citizens are learning little
of scientific, or academic value.
But, that said, I do believe that Whyville can come out of this slump. And as
long as there remains even a few citizens on this site willing to learn, I will
stay. =)
Thank you for listening, I would enjoy hearing other citizens' opinions on this
as well, feel free to Y-Mail me, or write to the Times!
-QUISP
P.S. I greatly value the ability to express our opinions and ideas through the
Times -- and to me, that is more important than any of the other things that one
can learn on Whyville.
