If you've been reading my "Media Menu" column or attending Media Hour, you've
heard about the Whyville Writer's Workshop that we've been considering. Thanks
to the positive feedback we've been getting from you all, we have decided to go
for it!
This writing workshop is for those of you who are interested not only in
writing, but also in getting some feedback on your writing. "Did I get my point
across?" "Did my readers enjoy my piece?" "How might I improve my writing?" If
you've wondered these things, this workshop is for you.
To participate, simply Y-mail me your story or article (they can be fictional or
factual). Article or story length should be about the same, or maybe a bit
longer, as you've seen in the Whyville Times. If an article is about some actual
events or scientific topic, build it on research to support your opinions.
I will send you comments and suggestions back via Y-mail, and you can send me
back your revisions for more thoughts.
Once a month, come and attend a live session of the
workshop at the Greek Theater. I will select pieces that I've received in Y-mail
to share with you, and we can all sit down and critique these pieces together.
What the participants of the workshop have to say about the story or article
will be published in a special "Literary Corner" section of the Whyville Times,
along with the first and final versions of the article. That way you'll see the
"before-and-after". You can call this a literary makeover, and you won't get
duct-taped for doing one of these!
There's a saying, "Diaries are written, stories and articles are re-written."
Don't forget that we'll be critiquing and offering suggestions to each other,
and we'll be doing a lot of rewriting in this workshop. If you're sensitive
about criticism, this might not be for you. If you're unsure about this whole
idea, just sign on to look at other people's stuff and see how it goes for them.
If you're excited and raring to go as I am, then start now by Y-mailing
me a piece of your work!
